THE Ban Ban Springs rest area, used by travellers and truck drivers will receive $80,000 from the Queensland Government towards a long-awaited makeover.

Transport and Main Roads Regional Director for Southern Queensland Kym Murphy said the funding would help identify and assess improvements for the facility.

“Rest areas are an important part of our road network, providing a stop-off point to take a break and avoid fatigue,” Ms Murphy said.

Ms Murphy said the planning process will focus on how Ban Ban Springs and the nearby heavy vehicle stopping area are currently being used.

“Options for upgrading the amenities, including the toilet block and pedestrian access between the two areas will be evaluated,” she said.

The project will be funded under the Transport System Planning Program, for priority planning projects across the state-controlled road network.

“This planning work will position the department to progress the project once more funding becomes available,” she said.

North Burnett Regional Council Mayor Rachel Chambers welcomed the funding injection for the planning projects.

The council have been advocating for funding to recognise the importance of Ban Ban Springs to First Nations people and to celebrate the significance of this location.

“We thank the Department of Transport and Main Roads for this announcement and look forward to working closely to ensure we recognise the cultural importance of this site while providing suitable amenities to the travelling public,” Cr Chambers said.
