Nine-year-old receives most outstanding at Eisteddfod

Gayndah's Donald MacGregor was just four when his affinity for music was born.

YOUNG TALENT: Donald MacGregor received the Most Outstanding Instrument Award for 15 years and under at the Maryborough Eisteddfod.

GAYNDAH'S Donald MacGregor was just four when his affinity for music was born.

After watching a brass band perform he asked his father if he could learn the drums and he was told he could, but only if he learnt the piano first.

Five years on and Donald's piano skills have earned him the Most Outstanding Instrument Award for 15 years and under at the Maryborough Eisteddfod.

"He attended seven piano sections and one violin section and got all first prizes,” Donald's father Bevan MacGregor said.

"He played them all from memory as usual and performed really emotionally.

"So the adjudicator was very happy with his preparation that day. She even said she would pay to listen to his performance.”

The St Joseph's Catholic Primary School student only recently received his trophy and certificate for the eisteddfod, which was held last year.

But it motivated him to strive for another successful year.

He played at Mundubbera's Australia Day ceremony and has his eye on upcoming events in Mundubbera and Eidsvold.

Donald was taught music by Meg Cunningham through her private music school in Mundubbera.

What's his purpose for pursuing music at such a young age?

"I want to make people happy, but it also makes me happy,” he said.
