OFTEN used as an excuse for a road trip, Australia is dotted with novelty architecture known as our 'big things'.

From the Big Prawn to the Big Pineapple and the Big Banana, travellers can't get enough.

And now you have the opportunity to buy in on the cult phenomenon.

For seven years, Neil and Tania Richards have loved both the challenge and freedom of owning Gayndah's Big Orange.

But they're ready for a new adventure, and that means selling up.

"Before buying the Big Orange we had spent a lot of time working for other people so it was good to be our own bosses,” Mr Richards said.

"We just bought the Big Orange and the café initially, and then we realised if we bought the orchard then we would have a supply of good quality fresh fruit to use.”

The property is available to be bought in separate parcels.

The Big Orange itself is being sold alongside the café, which trades seven days a week during citrus season, and a three-bedroom home.

A second parcel includes around 2.4 acres and a shed with a greening room.

Another orchard is up for grabs as well as a vacant block with river access.

"It would be handy to have the whole thing but if someone did it the same way we did, buying the café first, they could go from there,” Mr Richards said.

"We just realised that the income from the orchard covered more than the payments in buying it, and we secured quality fruit.”

Around a third of the Big Orange's customers are locals.

The rest are travellers stopping buy to see what citrus capital has to offer, and snapping a picture.

"It really switches on in the winter months,” Mr Richards said.

"From the end of March, bang, every day we have traffic pouring through.”
