Copper wire makes for easy bucks for thieves

THIEVES have made off with copper wire from Ergon Energy depots in Biggenden and Gayndah.

At Biggenden, offenders broke in through the wire fence between the depot and the National Australia Bank.

Depot staff found the break in when they arrived for work on Friday morning, March 1.

Along with the copper wire, some tools had been stolen.

Senior Constable Patrick Van Den Heuvel, from Biggenden Police Station, said every few years the greater Wide Bay/Burnett area is targeted by would-be thieves who are looking for easy money from the sale of copper wire.

In another incident at the Biggenden State School, cleaning staff on Monday morning found the science block had been broken into during the weekend.

Snr Const Van Den Heuvel said no property was taken.

"Investigations are continuing into the break-in,” he said.

On Tuesday, March 12, a Biggenden woman will appear in the Maryborough Magistrates Court on an offence of break and enter at the Biggenden Fire Station last month.
