Brahman sale raises $20,000 for flooded farmers

Hazelton Brahmans donated 10 cows to raise money for farmers suffering from the flood crisis.

THE KIRK family have friends in north Queensland who are suffering from the recent flood crisis.

Their Hazelton Brahman Stud was one of several local businesses to rally together and raise $20,000 for those dealing with the devastation.

On Monday, Hazelton donated 10 of Grace Kirk's brahman cows to be sold by Burnett Livestock and Realty at Biggenden Saleyards.

Alone they raised $15,690 for QCWA Public Rural Crisis Fund.

"People in the bush look after each other,” Stuart Kirk said.

"We wanted to do something to help so we reached out to the Whitakers and they said they were thinking the same thing.

"They wiped the fees for a sale and promoted it online.”

JBS Australia paid premium for the brahmans at 254.2c/kg.

Mr Kirk said they decided on QCWA Public Rural Crisis Fund as their charity of choice because 100 per cent of the funds go into the farmers' pockets.

Stephanie Whitaker, of Burnett Livestock and Realty, commended the Kirks for opening up a conversation about how the region can help.

"It doesn't have to be donating cattle,” she said.

"Whether it's donating $5 or baking some brownies to send up to those in need, there's a lot of ways we can help.”
