BIGGENDEN State School is one step closer to growing its dream bush tucker garden after being named a recipient of a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant.
The school was selected from more than 1000 applicants for the grant which aims to inspire students through hand-on projects focusing on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices and enhancing native habitats.
The grant means Biggenden students are now able to develop their Lunchtime Landcare - Waste Warriors and Bush Tucker project.
In its project proposal, the school said it would expand food scrap collection and composting throughout and create a bush tucker garden at the old chook pen.
"A key group of students will meet once a week at lunch to establish and maintain waste management,” the proposal said.
"This group will have representatives from each class and they will lead their class in waste management.”
Students in Years 3-6 students will investigate and liaise with a local Landcare groups that have already established bush tucker gardens.
Landcare Australia CEO Shane Norrish said the school was highly deserving of the grant and Landcare was excited for the students to make a difference to their local environment.
"This fantastic response shows the community's passion for caring for the environment,” Dr Norrish said.
"Junior Landcare offers opportunities for sharing knowledge, developing skills and creating experiences that foster connections with the environment and community from childhood to adulthood.”
The program is being funded through proceeds from the sale of the Woolworths reusable bags, Bag for good.
Woolworths Fraser Coast group manager Dean Hodgkinson said he was proud to see the funds raised from Bag for good going directly into the community.
"In partnership with our local customers, we can continue to empower this next generation of school students to work towards a more sustainable Australia,” Mr Hodgkinson said.
