Queensland actors and crew workers are being given the opportunity to work on Netflix’s latest blockbuster starring Chris Hemsworth.
As first revealed by The Courier-Mail in September, sci-fi flick Escape from Spiderhead is the latest big-budget project to shift to Queensland because of the easing COVID-19 restrictions in the state, and is set to begin on location on the Gold Coast this month.

Screen Queensland on Monday invited crew workers from around the state to apply for positions across all departments on the film, which Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said would create 360 local jobs and pump around $47 million into the local economy.
The Courier-Mail understands local acting agencies have also put forward actors for supporting roles in the film, joining the star cast including Hemsworth, Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett, as well as extras.
Kirsty McGregor’s McGregor Casting is handling casting for the film.
Escape from Spiderhead is based on George Saunders’ short story, published in The New Yorker in 2010, which follows convicts in the near future who can volunteer as medical subjects in the hope of shortening their sentences.
The production was coaxed to Queensland through the Federal Government’s $400 million Location Incentive offset with a sweetener from Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Incentive Program.
“As Europe and America continues to struggle with the pandemic, Queensland’s reputation as a world-class film destination, alongside global recognition as a safe environment for filmmaking, has led to unprecedented demand to produce projects here,” Ms Palaszczuk said on Monday.
“Because we’ve managed the health here in Queensland, we’re now able to capitalise on that demand and focus on rebuilding our economy.”
It comes as NBC series Young Rock continues to film in Brisbane’s Screen Queensland Studios and on location around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, largely employing Queensland crew and extras.
The series, along with two other NBC productions, was also lured to Queensland during the pandemic under both the Federal Government’s tax offset and the State Government’s location incentive.
All qualified and available Queensland crew are invited to send an up-to-date CV, with the position they are applying for in the email subject line to the dedicated email address, spiderheadeoi@gmail.com
