Swift work by emergency services has averted an evacuation of up to 100 people from several businesses near a gas leak in Brisbane’s south.
An out-of-control car struck a gas main at the corner of Mains Rd and McCullough St, Sunnybank, about 7pm.
The sole occupant of the vehicle was uninjured, but the resulting gas leak prompted a shutdown of the intersection as Queensland Fire and Emergency Services responded.
While there are several shopping centres on the intersection, a QFES spokesman said about 8.45pm the leak had been reduced by half, and evacuation had not been necessary.
Some crews remained at the scene to continue testing.
Police had earlier warned people to avoid the area.
