The hero tradie who dashed 200 metres to Hannah Baxter’s aid as she lay on the ground screaming, has told of the heartbreaking moment he realised “her babies” were still in the car that had been deliberately set it alight by their father.

HERO tradie Matt Gee-East knew something was wrong when he saw black smoke billowing from Raven Street on Wednesday morning.

It was the Baxter family car on fire with children Lainah, 6, Aaliyah, 4 and Trey, 3, inside.

Instead of calling for help, Mr Gee-East and his two brothers ran about 200m to the inferno and attempted to gain access to the children inside.

“My brothers actually yelled out - I thought it was a house fire but we came around the corner and seen the car,” Mr Gee-East said.

“When we got up here, (Hannah) was on the sidewalk screaming. She said her babies were in the car.

“The car started going down the hill and we tried to stop it. We got the back door open and that’s when I seen the kids in the car.

“It was bad. It’s not something you want to see everyday, but it’s happened and I want to keep going.”

Mr Gee-East said he would not soon forget the ordeal.

“I didn’t realise (the kids were in there) until the door come open, but it was too late,” he said.

“It’s crazy - absolutely crazy. I didn’t know what had caused it either until we started hearing things on the news.

“It is what it is I guess. We just have to get back into the roll of things with work and keep going.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australians all over the country were “shocked, saddened and devastated” by what had happened in the Queensland suburban street.

“Hannah and her three children so senselessly and maddeningly murdered in what has occurred in a terrible act of violence and it just grieves our hearts terribly today,” he said.

“Our thoughts go out to those who are close to the family, those who are just unable to come to terms with this terrible horror.

“I know Australians all around the country will be feeling the same way, just shaking their head, but full of empathy, full of love for those who were close to this family and their friends.”

He urged anyone in the community who needed help to reach out.

“There are services and supports available to you to happen you and if you are in a position to help, then please help,” Mr Morrison said.

“But today Australians, just look at each other and give thanks for each other. This terrible, awful event, our hearts are full of grief.”
