It’s the end of an era for the former CQ Leagues Sports Club, with demolition to begin over the coming days.
The CQ Leagues Club was formed in 2009 in a bid to host a National Rugby League team in Central Queensland.
The club was a popular venue for Bundaberg locals and included a main bar and sports bar, bistro, TAB and pokies.
The shock closure led to 19 staff members losing their jobs in 2016 and the site has sat derelict ever since.
The site had been fully approved by council for a ‘24 hour, 7 day a week’ childcare centre in 2020, but the project was dropped by a past owner.
RetireEzy Pty Ltd, owned by residential estate and aged care facility developer Steven Canard, bought the land in 2021, for $935,000 and now has Bundaberg Regional Council approval to transform the site into units called Millbank Residences.
Reliance Demolishing has been contracted to demolish the old building after the activity was approved by council on August 24.
A development application by InsiteSJC, complemented with designs by architect Tomas O’Malley, shows Millbank Residences will be comprised of 26 apartments and townhouses.
The configuration will include six three-bedroom townhouses, eight two-bedroom apartments, eight three-bedroom apartments, four four-bedroom units, and three-storey units and two-storey townhouses.
Amenities will include a cafe that will be open 6am-8pm, Monday through to Sunday, a flashy pool deck overlooking the Wests Panthers Rugby League grounds, 58 resident car parks, seven visitor car parks, six cafe car parks and 12 bicycle spaces.
It is unclear when construction of the project could begin.
