Rescue crews have been forced to rescue a man from the ocean after his yacht was damaged and stranded and he became sick while sailing off the Bundaberg coast.
Emergency services were called out to waters about 45km east of Burnett Heads at 3.47pm on Thursday when another sailor on board the yacht alerted Marine Rescue Queensland about the man’s condition.
The yacht was unable to return to land due to engine difficulties and a damaged sail, a LifeFlight spokesman said in a statement Friday.
The man was forced to don a lifejacket and swim away from the stranded yacht before the rescue crew could winch him into the helicopter safely.
Once on board he was treated on by a critical care paramedic.
The yacht and its lone remaining sailor were towed to shore shortly after.
The man was airlifted to land in a stable condition, then taken by an ambulance to Bundaberg Hospital for further treatment.
