University ranking site to launch

A UNIVERSITY ranking website is set to be created by 2012 following the success of My School — but Bundaberg students say it may not be necessary.

A UNIVERSITY ranking website is set to be created by 2012 following the success of My School — but Bundaberg students say it may not be necessary.

CQUniversity Bundaberg education students Christina Norris, Jessica May and Amanda Wilson say while they would pay attention to the My Uni site, it would not be a major consideration in where they chose to study.

“We have the Good Universities Guide already, but I didn’t really read that,” Miss Norris said.

“I would probably look at the site, but I wouldn’t just rely on it.”

Miss May agreed.

“We came to this uni because we had already heard from people that it had a really good education course,” she said.

“You pay a lot of attention to what people who have been here say. If they say it’s good you are more likely to listen to them. I would prefer to hear it from people who go here than a website.”

Miss Wilson said many of her friends thought regional Queensland universities would not stack up against bigger universities in larger cities.

“It’s not like that at all,” she said.

“You get here and it’s really great. The lecturers are so supportive and helpful. I think the site would be good to prove that side of things.”

The My Uni website would rate institutions on courses, quality of teaching, learning outcomes and campus facilities.

CQUniversity deputy vice-chancellor Professor Angela Delves said the uni welcomed initiatives that provided students and parents with access to accurate information.

“We welcome this because it supports our ethos of becoming more and more engaged with the community,” she said.

“We already contribute a mass of data to the federal government about every aspect of our operations, so it should not create extra workloads.”

Prof Delves said CQUniversity could greatly benefit from the site.

“As long as the data is analysed and conveyed fairly and accurately, CQUni stands to gain in profile as we have good outcomes due to our strong support for the student journey,” she said.

“Value-adding is the key and we’d like to see that acknowledged.”
