The region’s top performing schools for 2020 have been named following a study of academic outcomes carried out by an independent education body. See how your school rated here:

Kids need to 'get out and run' and stopping community sport 'prevents that happening'

St Luke’s Anglican School principal Craig Merritt is humble when he talks about his secondary school ranking the highest for academic achievement in the Bundaberg region.

“We were honoured to be acknowledged in such a way,” he said.

“It reflects, no doubt, the dedication and professionalism of our teachers. It’s outstanding the work they do with the students.”

Mr Merritt said while they did not purposely set out for awards and titles, the way the school handled learning was very much a deliberate practice.

“It’s very intentional to have a focus on really positive learning,” he said.

“It’s a natural outcome of what we do as a holistic Christian school.”

Mr Merritt said there was a strong positive learning environment at St Luke’s, and with kindy to Year 12 covered, students had the chance to make long-lasting friendships and learn to their best ability in a safe environment.

Mr Merritt said the school was a big believer in “intellectual rigour” and focusing on students growing in their own capacity rather than constantly aiming for straight As.

The school also works with parents and fosters an overall environment based on trust and respect.

The secondary branch of the local school was given a score of 98 out of 100 by the online Better Education community platform.

The school’s primary wing was scored 94 points out of 100.

Alloway State School was ranked highest for primary schools, with a ranking of 95 out of 100.

Better Education states the overall score is an index of performance, rather than a ranking, with schools assigned a number from 60 to 100.

The website was established in 2008 to provide a platform for education professionals across Australia.
