BOWLED OVER: Talented trio takes on the best in the state

Age not a barrier for these three young bowlers who continue to advocate for lawn bowls in the region

WOWAN has produced a pre-teen triple-threat bowling attack that is competing against the best in Queensland.

Eddie Everrs, (13) Isaac Everrs, (11) and Tommy Brown (10) are seeing how they stack up at the Queensland State Junior Bowls Carnival in Toowoomba. (January 20-25)

Eddie and Isaac's father Cameron's latest report is that the three lads are competing in the U15 Singles division after all three played in the U18 Open Triples (January 22) and the Everrs brothers in the U15 Pairs (Januray 20).

"My boys played in the pairs Monday and lost all three games but went down fighting in two of those games," Everrs said.

"The last one especially went down to the end where they needed three to win and couldn't get over the line.

"These three are playing against kids anywhere from 15-18 years-old."

This Queensland carnival was an open nomination event for any registered juniors from bowls clubs across the state which, according to Everrs, has attracted a large percentage of players from the southeast corner of the state.

"They are certainly showing their mettle against most of the players around the Brisbane area that get more opportunity for coaching and playing than our country kids do," Everrs said.

"The Wowan community and Central Queensland can be proud that they are here giving it a crack.

"But, if they win some games, they are a chance of progressing into the U15 Singles finals tomorrow."

Tommy's grandmother Marg Scandrett from the Wowan Bowls Club said that it was great for her club to have these accomplished young players.

"My grandson plays all the time in Wowan in our club's community challenge which attracts a lot of families," Scandrett said.

"The Everrs boys have taken bowls up at school and they are very keen players.

"They often play in Rockhampton and even verse adults there and in Wowan."

Everrs echoed Scandrett's sentiment and said the active involvement of the three youngsters had breathed new life into the Wowan Bowls Club.

"Given bowls clubs are usually associated with older people, to have the kids there has put a spring in the step of our elders and given them a renewed purpose to teach them the game and the etiquette involved," Everrs said.

"They get to rub shoulders with people who have lived some extraordinary lives."

If the three boys are lucky enough they may earn selection in the Queensland Junior team from this tournament.
