SUNSHINE COAST

Macca’s® FQPL 3 Sunshine Coast Grand Finals

Men: Noosa Lions vs. Kawana FC (Saturday, 16 September | Sunshine Coast Stadium | 5:00pm)

The stage is set for an epic 2023 Macca’s® FQPL 3 Sunshine Coast Men Grand Final between Noosa Lions and Kawana FC this Saturday afternoon at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Noosa Lions and Kawana FC both defeated Premiers Caloundra FC on their way to securing a place in the Grand Final, with the Lions defeating them 2-0 in their Semi Final clash and Kawana 3-1 in last weekend’s Preliminary Final clash.

Kawana FC had a superb final month of their league campaign with three wins in a row securing fourth place and building confidence among the squad. Kawana FC were too good for Woombye in the first week of finals, defeating the Snakes 3-1 at the Snake Pit, before knocking out Premiers Caloundra in the Preliminary Final.

In their previous meetings this season, the two sides played out a 3-3 draw in Round 6 before Noosa upstaged Kawana 1-0 away from home to claim the season head-to-head advantage.

Women: Maroochydore FC vs. Noosa Lions (Saturday, 16 September | Sunshine Coast Stadium | 7:30pm)

Maroochydore FC face the Noosa Lions in a blockbuster 2023 Macca’s® FQPL 3 Sunshine Coast Women Grand Final this Saturday evening at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

After falling short in their Premiership battle against Beerwah Glasshouse, Maroochydore FC fired back in a big way in their Semi Final clash, defeating Beerwah 6-2 to be the first team to secure their place in the Grand Final.

After finishing the home and away season as one of the form teams, the Noosa Lions didn’t slow down in week one of finals, defeating Woombye FC 2-0 to set up a Preliminary Finals matchup against Premiers Beerwah. Noosa and Beerwah played out one of the games of the year in their Preliminary Final, with a 90’ minute goal to Noosa making it 3-3 to send the match to extra-time and ultimately penalties. The Lions held their nerve to progress through 4-2 on penalties and secure a second FQPL Grand Final berth for the club.

Across the previous three match-ups between the two sides, Maroochydore holds a 2-1 head-to-head advantage, with 3-2 and 1-0 wins, while Noosa’s sole win was a 5-3 victory.

Grand Final victories in 2019 and 2022 will provide Knights the confidence to perform at the biggest stage and will head up the M1 confident in their tag as favourites. The Gold Coast Knights and Moreton Bay have met twice before this season, with both games ending as draws, suggesting we are set for an enthralling battle at Suncorp Stadium this Sunday.

Moreton Bay’s star forward Marquez Walters will lead the line for the Jets, looking to add to his league topping 17 goals. For the Jets, the performances of Declan Smith at the back and stalwart Chris Maher have been crucial to their success and will be relying on their experienced stars in such a big occasion. An Australia Cup Round of 32 clash against Victorian NPL outfit Heidelberg United earlier in the season will have taught the Jets plenty about their character, which will be tested as they face an inform Gold Coast Knights

Gold Coast Knights will be looking again to their star defensive duo of Austin Ludwik and Oskar Dillon to shutout the Jet’s attack, as well as to combative midfielder Tyson Martin who scored in the Preliminary Final. Knights have plenty of quality going forward, with Inman, Poljak, McMorrow and Debele among the many Knights attackers who will pose a threat to the Jets. Midfield maestro Max Brown will again be one to watch after he scored a wonderful hat-trick in the Preliminary Final to book Knights a place in the Grand Final. Brown again showed how much he relishes the big occasion, also scoring twice against Olympic FC in the Kappa Pro Series Grand Final earlier in the season.

It has been a terrific season for Easts, with star Striker Sofie Person the one to score the winning goal in the Semi Final. Easts have been a fantastic outfit from top to bottom this season, with the perfect mix of youth and experience a key factor behind their strong season so far.

Sarah Evans’ Gold Coast United side will still be on cloud nine after they knocked out heavy favourites Lions FC in the Semi Final last weekend. After losing the 2022 NPL Grand Final to Lions, United will feel they have passed a massive test and are ready to go one better this season. Gold Coast United have put together a fantastic run-in recent times, much thanks to Bronte Rose who has scored four hat-tricks in the back half of the season to propel United into the Grand Final. Zoe Corbett has been a consistent performer for United across the season, putting in top quality performances week in week out, while the defensive duo of Momo Hayashi and Mary Craven continues to excel.

A resounding 5-0 victory over Peninsula Power in the Preliminary Final reminded everyone why Knights enter the weekends Suncorp Stadium showpiece event against Moreton Bay United as favourites.

In their way stands the Moreton Bay United Jets, who finished the season in 2nd place on the ladder and will be a more than worthy advisory for Knights.

Knights and Moreton Bay have met twice before this season, with both games ending in stalemate.

The Jets have plenty of firepower of their own who will be eager for a chance to make their mark on the biggest stage, with star forward Marquez Walters showing this season why he is one of the top strikers in the state after scoring 17 goals in the regular season.

The NPL Women’s Grand Final showpiece at Suncorp Stadium is set, with Gold Coast United making the trip north this Sunday night to face Eastern Suburbs.

Sarah Evans’ side will be bouncing after they knocked out heavy favourites Lions FC in the Semi Final over the weekend, denying Lions their sixth straight Grand Final appearance thanks to a first minute strike from Zoe Corbett.

It has been a remarkable resurgence from Gold Coast United, who have bounced back from a mid-season wobble to head into the weekend undefeated in their last 11 matches!

The last three meetings between the two sides have ended in one win, one draw and one loss for United, suggesting Sunday’s final will be an evenly fought battle.

Gold Coast United will again look to Striker Bronte Rose and defender Momo Hayashi as a source of inspiration when they run out at Suncorp but know that the key to their run to the Grand Final has been in fantastic overall team performances.

Eastern Suburbs have proven their mettle so far this season, showing remarkable character to score in the 122nd minute against Peninsula Power in the second Semi Final to book their place in the Grand Final.
