Never too late for sporting greatness

Callide Valley darts player will try his luck against the best of Queensland’s Veterans.

A LOCAL darts player has proved it’s never too late to have sporting success.

Moura man Pete Dwyer, 50, has made the Zone 8 Veterans team and will travel to Brisbane in November to compete against the best over-50 darts players in Queensland.

Dwyer earned his spot after competing at the Zone 8 Veterans Trials in Rockhampton representing his local club the Callide Valley District Darts Association.

Dwyer couldn’t believe he made the Zone 8 squad after patches of inconsistent darts across the weekend.

“To be honest, I didn't think I made it,” Dwyer said.

“The first day I played ordinary compared to what I know I can do.

“On day two I picked up my heavier darts and went to town then.”

Dwyer said there were about 30 darts players vying for a spot in the squad and if it wasn’t for the support of his fellow club members, he might not have made selection.

“I wouldn’t have got there without the likes of Narelle, Simon and Ra-Cheal,” Dwyer said.

“They were talking to me when I was down on the Saturday night.

“They picked me up and picked me back up for Sunday.

“Then my wife on Sunday morning told me to pull my finger out and get in there and have a go.”

Dwyer is looking forward to November and the opportunity to compete at the state level.

“Can’t wait for it. I want to get in and give it a crack,” Dwyer said. “It’s the best over-50 players in Queensland.”

Dwyer said he’d played darts when he was younger but then stopped for 10 years.

He had other patches when he resumed the game, then aged 48 he gave it another shot and now loved competing with his club.
