Initial inquiries indicate about 2.30pm a white 2014 Toyota Yaris was travelling south along the Bruce Highway on approach to Christensen Road when a collision occurred with a grey 2022 Toyota Hilux utility travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver and sole occupant of the Yaris, a 57-year-old-man Brisbane City man sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.

The occupants of the utility sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospital.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators will prepare a report for the coroner and are appealing for witnesses, especially those with dashcam vision of the crash, or the moments leading up to it to come forward

Emergency services reopened the highway five hours after it was closed in both directions following a two-car crash near Childers.

The highway was closed in both directions at Christensen Rd at Booyal, north of Childers, but reopened about 7.35pm.

Meanwhile, a person is in a critical condition following a serious traffic crash at Gladstone on Sunday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said the two-vehicle crash, involving a ute and Ford Falcon at 5.47pm, forced the closure of the Bruce Highway between Turkey Beach and Tannum Sands.
