KEPNOCK State High School is gearing up to celebrate 50 years in education with an open day followed by an evening social function.

Former principal John Young visited the school to check on preparations for the 50th anniversary golden jubilee and meet current principal Jenny Maier to discuss arrangements.

"Mr Young is the fourth and longest serving principal of Kepnock, serving from 1971 to 1988," Ms Maier said.

"A tour of the school, visits to classrooms and conversations with students revealed numerous changes in the 26 years since he retired and Mr Young was delighted to see how the school had progressed."

The anniversary celebration will be held on Saturday, June 7, starting in the R J Young Hall at 10.30am.

This will be followed by school tours for former pupils and friends and a history display until 3pm.

Then there will be an evening social function from 6.30pm.

A full history of the school has been published and will be on sale as a commemorative history album along with other specially designed memorabilia.

Ms Maier said the event will be attended by hundreds of past students and staff.

They will include internationally renowned educator and head of the Stronger Smarter Institute Chris Sarra, principal from 1989-1998 Adele Freeman, former Dux and now Firelight Productions in Sydney film producer Ellenor Cox and Geoff Hardy Wines winemaker Shane Harris.

The political side will be represented by former student and Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt and former student and retired Member of Parliament Brian Courtice.
