It’s been a horror summer for electrical safety after multiple fires and fatalities have occurred.

Throughout the season many Australians have tragically lost their lives as a result of electrical issues in and around the home such as fallen powerlines.

As part of a national roadshow, Master Electricians Australia chief executive officer Malcolm Richards is visiting the region in a bid to prevent electrical incidents and fatalities.

“(It’s been) a terrible summer in which we’ve seen a number of homes and lives lost in fires or electrical accidents – most recently due to fallen power lines in a cyclone,” Mr Richards said.

“We’ve also seen tragedies arising from faulty electrical equipment or appliances that were not being used the right way.”

The CEO urges local homeowners to take simple safety precautions which includes testing safety switches every three months and ensuring they are on every circuit.

Mr Richards said residents should only use power tools and appliances for their intended purpose and avoid using indoor products outdoor in the weather.

He said damaged electrical goods should be repaired or discarded immediately as well as the insulation around power leads.

Additionally homeowners are encouraged to avoid DIY electrical work, check their solar panels every few years to ensure they are working safely and stay away from fallen power lines.

“Incidents like these can often be avoided if homeowners take basic precautions and while I’m here in Bundaberg I’m urging people to stop and think about their electrical safety,” Mr Richards said.

“We know we work with a product that can result in severe damage, injury or even death if it’s not used safely.

“As electrical contractors we are constantly working to improve safety and with these few tips we know that homeowners can help us in that fight.”

During his visit to Bundaberg today (Wednesday), Mr Richards will meet with electrical contractors to discuss industry trends, concerns and proposed changes to safety regulations and rooftop solar systems.
