BUNDY businessmen will trade their suits for lycra in May when they ride their bicycles more than 1100km from Brisbane to Longreach to help the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

BCI Lawyers director Les Hancock is the major sponsor and organiser of the Ride West event and has received plenty of support.

“The amount of work done by the Royal Flying Doctor Service really inspired me to try and give something back to them,” Mr Hancock said.

“I really want to make a difference.”

Mr Hancock and 33 other men and women will make the 1100km ride over 10 days, covering up to 148km on some days.

He said the support and enthusiasm for the project had amazed him from day one.

“I only made six calls and it all fell into place,” he said.

“As soon as you mention the Royal Flying Doctor Service, people are instantaneously supportive.”

Mr Hancock hopes to raise more than $100,000 and says he is confident he will reach the mark.

While the fundraiser is aimed at businesses, he has encouraged the community to get on board.

“Every little bit can help make a difference,” he said.

Other supporters of the event include the National Australia Bank, Lindsay Brothers, Black Toyota and the Friendlies Hospital.

Mr Hancock said the group of 34, which included four Bundaberg men, had been training hard in the lead up to the event.

“We do about three training sessions during the week and then we go for longer rides on the weekend which are getting longer the closer we get to the ride,” he said.

He said the safety of the riders was very important so he had hired a trainer and a nutritionist to make sure everyone was in perfect shape for the trip.

The group will pass through many locations including Oakey, Chinchilla, Yuleba, Mitchell, Morven, Augathella, Tambo, Blackall and Barcaldine.
