A petition on the Beach Milieu Urban Wetland is high on the agenda for the first Bundaberg Regional Council meeting of 2025 on Tuesday.
The petition follows ongoing concerns raised by the community about the wetland’s decline over the past decade.
The council engaged AECOM in February 2022 to assess the health of the wetland, which was constructed during the development of the Beach Milieu residential estate.
The investigation focused on understanding the wetland’s condition, identifying pollutant sources, and exploring short, medium and long-term solutions.
Key objectives include reducing pollution, enhancing biodiversity, and reconnecting the local community with the wetland.
The recommended solutions aim to:
Manage pollution sources and improve stormwater treatment
Strengthen the wetland’s resilience to weather and climate changes
Promote biodiversity and improve habitats for fauna, including controlling mosquitoes and cane toad populations
AECOM’s site visit in March 2022 revealed several issues affecting the wetland’s health, such as organic material and algae growth, as well as litter and weed problems.
These observations have informed the development of solutions, a report on the situation states.
A community survey conducted between October 2020 and January 2022 highlighted concerns about odour, water quality, sediment accumulation, and biodiversity loss.
Residents suggested improvements, including more native vegetation, better maintenance, and additional family-friendly features in the park.
