The fate of two Bundaberg fishermen could be clearer after police used a remote-controlled diving vessel to search the Cassandra.

The Cassandra sank off Waddy Pt  on Fraser Island on Monday April 4.

Two Bundaberg fishermen, David Chivers, 36, and Matt Roberts, 60, are still missing despite an extensive air and sea search of the area. 

ABC reported the police are confident a remote-controlled diving vessel will help them determine how the Cassandra sank.

The wreckage of the trawler has been located 47 metres below the water's surface.

Wide Bay police Superintendent Mark Stiles said video footage from the diving vessel would help investigations and help prepare a report for the coroner.

"We've operated a remotely operated vessel to dive onto the Cassandra and take vision of the vessel and that's been quite informative to our investigations," he said.

"It also provides information to the coroner about the circumstances that may have contributed to the loss of the vessel and may provide some answers to the family and to the coroner as to the circumstances that go towards that loss."
