Police investigate Bundaberg burnout video with child in car
Police have launched an investigation after footage emerged of a driver performing burnouts with a special-needs child in the passenger seat near Bundaberg. VIDEO, PHOTOS.
Alarming footage of a child seated in the passenger seat of a car during a frenzied burnout stunt has emerged online.
Video footage released to this publication shows an adult male performing multiple burnouts at a rural intersection west of Bundaberg, along with a young child – reportedly with special needs – seated in the front passenger seat.
Toxic fumes and rubber smoke engulf another man as he filmed the antics on Smiths Crossing Rd and Bucca Rd intersection last month.
Remnants of the reckless activity remain, with multiple tyre tracks burned into the road.
Bundaberg Police Chief Inspector Grant Marcus reviewed the footage and said offending of a similar nature was always dangerous, but was “heightened” with the presence of a child.
Other people known to the boy said he had special needs and was not fully aware of the risks.
They said they made multiple reports to police after the footage was posted to Snapchat on October 12.
Inspector Marcus confirmed on Thursday that police had launched an investigation into the matter.
He warned other motorists that performing similar stunts was highly illegal and could attract hefty fines, licence suspensions and, in some cases, prison time.
While no charges have been laid in relation to the footage, reckless driving behaviour while a child was present could attract substantial child harm charges, he said.
