A Bundaberg man has received a prison sentence after sending his former partner a chilling threat.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, pleaded guilty to one count of breaching a domestic violence order in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday, March 9, 2023.

The court heard the former glazier had developed a meth habit following a traumatic event, and had started offending against his partner shortly after.

In the man’s most recent offending, he sent a text message to the victim stating, “I’ll cave your head in”, further telling her that he could do it before police could arrive.

In sentencing, Magistrate John McInnes said the man “obviously” was not a criminal as his first choice in life, saying a number of factors had contributed to the breakdown in his behaviour.

Mr McInnes said there seemed to be an obsessive element to the man‘s behaviour, which had included previous convictions of offences including stalking.

“Now, most threats are never made good on, but once in a while, particularly in a domestic violence setting, they are and sometimes quite horrifically,” Mr McInnes said, telling the man he had ”a real problem” with adhering to domestic violence orders.

Taking into account the man’s record, the nature of the threat, his pattern of persistence and his guilty plea, Mr McInnes sentenced him to nine months’ prison with immediate parole, having served 113 days in pre-sentence custody.
