Jarvie Brendon O’Hanlon in Bundaberg court for filming woman’s crotch

A Bundaberg court has heard how a man who had a social worker visit his home secretly filmed her without her knowledge. Here’s everything that was said in court:

A Bundaberg court has heard how a former butcher who benefited from the support of a social worker who visited him at his home was caught secretly filming the woman’s vaginal area.

Jarvie Brendon O’Hanlon was living in a small, demountable home at Inala, in Brisbane, when the offending took place between June 1, 2020 and October 13, 2020.

The court heard that a police search of O’Hanlon’s home and subsequent check of his phone revealed nine videos, three of which formed the basis of the charge of observations or recordings in breach of privacy.

The victim then viewed the videos at the police station and realised they were of her body, stating that she had not given consent and had no idea the videos were being taken.

The court heard one video was 57 minutes long, while another ran for one hour and four minutes. They were taken while the social worker was talking to the man in his home.

But it’s not the first offence that has brought O’Hanlon before the courts.

He was given a suspended jail sentenced in the District Court of Brisbane on October 25, 2021, for grooming a child under the age of 16.

The fact the breach of privacy offences happened before his District Court sentenced formed the basis for a brief adjournment to ensure that totality was taken into account in sentencing on Monday.

The court heard that O’Hanlon, a former butcher, had made an early plea of guilty.

O’Hanlon’s lawyer Matt Molloy said his client suffered from schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder and was a carer for his father.

“My client is very remorseful; he had a very good relationship with his carer,” Mr Molloy said.

O’Hanlon, 36, spoke in the court briefly.

“I’m a changed man now; I can’t even look at the other sex …” he said.

The court heard the videos depicted the social worker’s genital region fully clothed and at no point was her body exposed.

O’Hanlon pleaded guilty to the charge of observations or recordings in breach of privacy.

Magistrate Edwina Rowan fined him $800, deferred to SPER.

A conviction was recorded.
