A former marine engineer has been charged with multiple counts of attempted indecent treatment of children.
Gregory George Simpson, 53, pleaded guilty in Bundaberg Magistrates Court to breaching his bail conditions while awaiting a hearing on charges including attempted indecent treatment of children under 16.
The court heard he failed to report to Bundaberg police station on one occasion as required by his bail conditions set in April.
Mr Simpson’s lawyer, Matt Maloy, told the court his client studied engineering in university and worked as a marine engineer and seaman for a number of years.
Since 2010, he had received a disability support pension for schizophrenia, and his main occupation was caring for his elderly mother with whom he lived.
Mr Maloy told the court Mr Simpson’s failure to report to Bundaberg police station as required by his bail conditions was an “oversight”, and he’d reported to the station as soon as he realised his error.
Magistrate Edwina Rowan sentenced Mr Simpson to a $150 good behaviour bond for two months.
The court heard Mr Maloy had recently received a brief of evidence in relation to the remainder of Simpson’s charges, including the attempted indecent treatment of children.
The next hearing for Simpson’s case will be a committal mention hearing on August 8.
Simpson is excused from attending the next hearing.
