A popular online rapper has appeared in a Bundaberg court over the part he played in a break-in by a group while a woman was at home.
On December 12, 2023, Tomasi (Tom) Nacanieli Cama Tikonilia, a local rapper known as LilBauSav, was charged with breaking into a home while a woman was inside.
Tikonilia pleaded guilty to one count of enter dwelling and commit.
Police Prosecutor Vicki Kennedy-Grills noted that Tikonilia had no criminal history, although his traffic history was submitted to Magistrate John McInnes.
One co-offender in the case had already been sentenced, while another co-offender remains in custody and will be mentioned at a later date.
Sergeant Kennedy-Grills told the court that one of Tikonilia’s co-offenders received a 12-month probation period.
This co-offender had a history of minor offending with two prior offences of violence but did not participate in entering the premises or touching anyone.
Sergeant Kennedy-Grills said that Tikonilia appeared to have played a more significant role in the offence compared to one of his co-offenders.
She said that general deterrents and probation would be appropriate.
Mr McInnes was uncertain about who pushed the occupant of the house onto the bed, with allegations pointing towards the rapper.
Tikonilia’s early guilty plea was noted and character references were provided to the magistrate by his legal team.
The rapper boasts 28 tracks and more than 1000 followers on Soundcloud with nearly 590 monthly listeners on Spotify.
In sentencing, Mr McInnes commented “for some reason you got caught up in this idiotic incident”.
Mr McInnes asked Tikonilia what he believed the maximum penalty for the offence was.
Tikonilia paused and suggested imprisonment, to which Mr McInnes corrected him, saying it was “life imprisonment”.
“You’re young and have no history and that’s what saves you from imprisonment,” Mr McInnes said.
Tikonilia was sentenced to a one-year probation period with no conviction recorded unless he commits another offence.
He will require permission from a probation officer to leave Queensland.
