Bundaberg mother speaks out after random attack on daughter

A woman says her daughter was left shaking and crying and that motorists drove past without stopping and helping as the 11-year-old endured a random attack at the hands of unknown older boys.

The mum says her young daughter is now afraid of going to school.

A Bundaberg mother has reached out to the community for information after she says her 11-year-old daughter was teased and beaten.

The mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, said her daughter was shaken and barely able to speak after the broad daylight attack in the Bundaberg suburb of Walkervale on Wednesday morning.

“She was that scared that when she got home she couldn‘t hardly talk,” she said.

“They started teasing her, kept telling her that she shouldn‘t go to school as she was too ugly then they pushed her into a pole were she smacked her back and head on to it.

“Then, they started laughing at her and kept pushing her around, kept calling her ugly, she started to cry then they kept laughing at her.”

The mum said her daughter was shy and quiet and that the experience had been made even more traumatic because no passing motorists stopped to help.

Her daughter had never met the three young men who she assumed were about 16 or 17, the mother said.

“I hope they get punished for what they did. No child should be bullied like that. All she was doing was trying to go to school and now she’s scared of going back to school,” she said.

The mother is calling for anyone with information to come forward to police.

The Department of Education issued a response to the complaint, saying action would be taken against any actions committed.

“Violence and anti-social behaviour are not tolerated in Queensland state schools and any situation that threatens the safety and wellbeing of students, staff or others in our school communities is treated extremely seriously, and dealt with as a matter of priority,” the statement said.

“The department is aware of an incident in which a... student was pushed over by students from another school.

“The incident is currently being investigated and disciplinary consequences will be applied where appropriate.

“The school is working with the victim’s family to ensure the student is well supported.

“Guidance Officer support is available at the school for any students that may require it.”
