A Bundaberg region dad has told a court he’d been having “too much of a good time” when a night out at the pub turned violent.

Brenton William Giblin-Lloyd had been drinking in the beer garden of the South Kolan Hotel around 9.20pm on April 22 when a verbal argument between he and another man sparked a brawl.

The court heard Giblin-Lloyd punched the other man in the head.

When the hotel’s licensee heard the commotion and went to intervene, Giblin-Lloyd grabbed him by the shoulders and headbutted him in the face, splitting the publican’s lip and leaving him with bruises and pain.

Giblin-Lloyd left the pub and police were able to observe the incident on CCTV before catching up with him at his house.

The court heard he made full admissions and expressed remorse, but later failed to comply with reporting to police when directed to attend the Bundaberg Police Station to give his details on June 13.

It was also heard he had a criminal history, albeit dated.

Giblin-Lloyd, a father of one who represented himself in court, said he’d had “too much of a good time” and things got out of hand while he’d been drinking alcohol.

He pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm, one count of being drunk or disorderly in a licensed premises and one count of contravening a direction or requirement of police.

The man said his drinking got out of hand at the South Kolan Hotel when he started assaulting others.

Magistrate John McInnes noted Giblin-Lloyd had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

“I don’t need to comment on the fact this is a pub brawl where the licensee tried to intervene and got headbutted for his troubles,” he said.

Giblin-Lloyd was fined $500 for the assault and ordered to pay $500 to the publican, referred to SPER.

He was convicted but not further punished for contravening a direction of police.
