With his power cut and on the brink of homelessness, a driver’s bad run of luck peaked when he smashed into a parked car.
Rather than stick around to face the music however, Brendan Geoffrey Modrow headed home.
He faced Bundaberg Magistrates Court charged with failing to stop at a crash scene and driving without due care and attention.
The court heard that on October 3, 2018, Modrow had been driving around about 8pm, and, during a moment of inattention, veered on to the wrong side of the road where he collided with a parked car on Morris St, West Gladstone.
According to police, the parked car sustained “significant damage” and the crash was serious enough that debris had littered the road and a tyre from the hit car had bounced on to the footpath.
Police found Modrow’s white Hyundai in his driveway, but the court heard Modrow had headed to a pub, running to a nearby Hungry Jacks when he realised police had arrived.
The court heard police found Modrow walking down the street the next morning and he told officers he’d been walking to the police station.
It was further heard that police believed there were indications Modrow was drunk at the time of the crash, which had been the reason he’d hid from police until the next day.
However, Modrow told the court that he had been sober at the time and had only started drinking after the incident.
Magistrate Edwina Rowan handed Modrow an $800 fine for failing to comply with the duty of a driver in a crash, and a further $1200 fine for failing to drive without due care and attention.
Modrow was disqualified from driving for three months.
Convictions were recorded.
