After months of delays the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre will finally open its doors to the public on Saturday morning.

The new aquatic centre is one of the region’s largest infrastructure investments, costing about $89.6 million, and located on the corner of Walker St and Fitzgerald St, and has been under construction since early 2022 after being first proposed in 2020.

The aquatic centre, featuring an Olympic-sized pool alongside a lap pool and indoor program pool, was originally promised to open in Spring 2025, but repeated issues delayed the grand-opening.

To ease their frustrations, Bundaberg residents were invited to tour the facilities in November in 30-minute allocated time slots, which close to 600 people did.

This week, the Bundaberg Regional Council revealed in a statement that the centre would open on Saturday and, to celebrate, local residents are invited to enjoy the facilities free of charge for the weekend “to thank residents for their patience, enthusiasm and support throughout the build.”

Mayor Helen Blackburn said the opening marked a major milestone for the region.

“This facility has been a long time coming and we can’t wait to see families, clubs, schools and visitors all enjoying this space,” she said.

“From the many wonderful accessibility features and the ample space for exercising, training or just having fun, this centre is designed for everyone.”

Some lucky locals who toured the facility ahead of the opening shared their excitement in what they saw.

“I think it is brilliant,” said Pamela Croft.

“I don’t live far from here so I have been watching it grow and grow.

“I can’t wait to bring my grandchildren here- they are going to love it too- I think it is brilliant for everyone in the family.”

Coral Walker said she loved that the centre catered to everyone.

“I will be coming here with my grandchildren,” she said.

The Bundaberg Aquatic Centre and all its facilities, minus the kiosk, will be open to the public between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, December 6, 2025 and Sunday, December 7.
