A 29-year-old backpacker is making a steady recovery after he suffered a medical incident while taking a swim on Valentines Day.

He was found unresponsive in a pool at the Dingo Blue Base Backpackers Hostel after nearly drowning.

Paramedics arrived at the hostel in Quay Street about 7.23pm on Monday and treated the man at the scene.

The man was taken to hospital and was being treated in the intensive care unit.

A Bundaberg Base Hospital spokesperson said on Wednesday the man remained in the intensive care unit (ICU) in a stable condition.

The Dingo Blue Base Hospital told the NewsMail he was making a steady recovery.

“He’s talking and he’s doing really well,” the spokesperson said.
