A local business has been awarded a State Government contract to improve a busy road at the Bundaberg Port.
Bundaberg contractor Berajondo has been chosen to facilitate new road pavement, services and drainage on Wharf Drive to improve the areas roadways and access for port users.
Gladstone Ports Corporation CEO Craig Haymes said the works were part of GPC’s Life Saving Commitment to Roads & Maritime Safety.
“The Port of Bundaberg is a busy place, with many tenants, port workers and community members utilising the roadways, so it’s a priority for us to ensure these roadways are safe for all,” Mr Haymes said.
“As a vital link in the supply chain, and as an area that has the ability to support future developments, the project aligns with our long term strategic vision.”
Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said it was important to Queenslanders that the Port of Bundaberg continue to remain a public asset.
“Thanks to the Palaszczuk Government, we have our strong port assets in the hands of Queenslanders,” Mr Bailey said.
“And it’s that commitment that sees our ports continue to support local jobs and training opportunities.
“Better access brings with it an open door for future opportunities for the Port and for Bundaberg as a whole.”
The works are expected to create about 20 local jobs.
Member for Bundaberg Tom Smith said works like these were vital for Queensland’s ability to export more efficiently.
“Delivering improved infrastructure that will
support our export operations is a big boost for Bundaberg and for Queensland as a whole,” Mr Smith said.
“The project brings with it a pipeline of jobs for the region – boosting our economic recovery from Covid 19.”
The Port is currently a hive of construction activity, with Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt recently announcing a $17.7m injection into the new Common User Infrastructure project.
The Wharf Drive improvement works and the Common User Infrastructure Project are just two of the projects earmarked for the Port for the foreseeable future.
Key upgrade projects completed by the State Government at the Port of Bundaberg include the $5.3 million upgrade to Buss and Newman Streets and the acquisition and remediation of the 7ha of decommissioned fuel tank terminal land in late 2021.
