The Kinkuna section of the Burrum Coast National Park will be closed until January 8 after intense rainfall left parts of the park’s mainly flat coastal plains inundated, unsafe and vulnerable to more flooding.
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation released a statement on Thursday, with principal ranger Dan Clifton saying localised flooding and the potential for further rain had impacted access roads and the area had to be closed for public safety and to protect the environment.
“The safety of visitors and staff to our protected areas is our number one priority, and we will continue to monitor conditions and review the scheduled reopening date,” Mr Clifton said.
“The Kinkuna section is a very popular camping area, and it was booked out over the Christmas/New Year period.
“People who booked camping areas during the closure period have been notified and full refunds are available.
“Rangers from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service have installed signs at the national park entrances advising that the area is closed to the public.
“We’re urging everyone to observe the signs which are there to keep people safe, and to stay out of the flood damaged park until it reopens.
“Entering closed areas can be dangerous and it is not worth risking your own safety or the safety of rangers or the emergency response staff who may be called upon to provide assistance.”
Visitors are advised that closures over the festive season include all access routes to Kinkuna, Palm Beach road, Southern Access road and the Kinkuna Bush camping area.
