A respected barrister with Legal Aid Queensland for more than two decades is expected to take up the role as a magistrate in Bundaberg in 2022.
John McInnes has worked for Legal Aid Queensland for the past 23 years and is one of three recent new magistrate appointments across Queensland.
Janice Crawford, John McInnes and Bevan Hughes were announced as the appointed magistrates last week by Attorney-General and Justice Minister Shannon Fentiman.
Mr McInnes was admitted to the Bar in 1995, and has been dedicated to providing legal assistance to financially disadvantaged members of society ever since.
As a senior member of the Inhouse Counsel at Legal Aid, he has obtained vast experience as a criminal defence barrister, and regularly appears in District and Supreme Court trials, as well as in the Court of Appeal.
The Gold Coast Bulletin reported he would work in Southport until April 2022, when he will transfer to Bundaberg.
When he transfers from Southport he will be replaced by Janice Crawford in Southport, who is initially working in Brisbane.
Bevan Hughes has been appointed magistrate in Cairns.
“I know all three of the new appointees will be assets to the court and I wish them every success for the remainder of their judicial careers,” Minister Fentiman said.
