A Bundaberg labourer will remain in custody after he pleaded guilty to 18 charges including fleeing from the scene of an accident, public nuisance, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

Joe Corbutt, 31, appeared in custody in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday October, 13, and is currently serving a three-year sentence for drug trafficking.

Defence Barrister Nick Larter appeared as the legal representative for Corbutt, and said his rough childhood has contributed to his crimes.

Foster schooling, homelessness, depression and anxiety all were considered by Magistrate John McInnes.

“You come from a background of struggle, and that is reflected in your history,” Mr McInnes said.

Mr McInnes said the relevant criminal history Corbutt presented meant there was “not much point in my delivering a sermon”.

Police prosecutor Andrew Powis recommended terms of imprisonment for the offences.

Offences included leaving the scene of an accident, which Mr McInnes noted Corbutt had a relevant history of.

“On this occasion it was serious dangerous driving and there was actually a crash,” Mr McInnes said.

Corbutt was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for nine months.

His licence was also disqualified for a further three months for driving with a relevant drug in his system.

Mr McInnes sentenced Corbutt to three months’ prison in relation to the three counts of failing to appear and 40 months’ prison for the other charges, with parole set for December 24, 2022.

Convictions were recorded for some charges.
