“Always laughing, always joking, always smiling.”
That’s how Bargara councillor Greg Barnes remembers John Fong Peng, affectionately known as Johnny Chopstix, the owner and operator of Bargara Asian Cuisine who passed away in his Tanner Street home last month.
Mr Fong Peng was 70.
“He’s a loss to the local community,” Cr Barnes said.
Cr Barnes said it was unknown if Mr Fong Peng’s funeral would be held locally or in Sydney, where most of his family resides.
The Covid-19 pandemic could also affect the outcome.
Diners have come to know Mr Fong Peng well over the years, both at his Bargara restaurant and the one he ran in Bundaberg before it closed.
In 2017, Mr Fong Peng and Elaine Lu opened Whale Bay Asian Cuisine in Urangan which overlooked the picturesque harbour.
“John was a true master of his trade and always made it a point to speak with his patrons with that ever-present and infectious smile,” Cr Barnes said.
“He also ensured the consistency and high quality of his meals and the service he offered which made a visit to the restaurant a truly enjoyable experience.
“I know that a great many local residents will be devastated at this news and our collective thoughts and condolences go out to his extended family.”
