A Bundaberg husband and wife have traded their corporate nine to five jobs for a doughnut shop which caters to food intolerances.

Kerry and Peter Blake have opened OMG Decadent Donuts at 12C Barolin St after spending the past six months selling the doughnuts at markets and events.

After working in the community service and sales industries for most of their working lives, the couple had long searched for a new business opportunity.

In 2017 Mrs Blake was diagnosed with coeliac disease along with a dairy and egg intolerance.

“I really pulled the hat-trick,” Mrs Blake said.

They would spend the next few years traversing through the intolerance menu, struggling to find foods Mrs Blake could enjoy as before.

Mrs Blake tried OMG Decadent Donuts for the first time at Brisbane’s West End Markets – kickstarting what has now become their new business.

“I thought it was great, but Peter was always screwing up his face at gluten free food,” she said.

After convincing Mr Blake to give the gluten, diary, egg and yeast free doughnuts a crack the pair knew they had found their next business venture.

They reached out to directors of OMG Decadents Donuts, founded by Brisbane foodie David Moore following the loss of his Brisbane river business during the 2011 floods.

By late 2022 they were travelling to markets and events, as one of 70 licensees for the doughnuts business.

There are 12 diverse flavours on offer, plus a “nudie-rudie” doughnut with no toppings.

It wasn’t long before they made the decision to open the shop front.

Just four days into opening the shop they said they wished they made the move earlier.

The pair plans on attending community events with the business, but are hoping to focus on the shopfront for the time being.

There are 12 flavours, which along with being free of the common allergens are also vegan, halal and kosher certified.
