THE first procedure in the newly commissioned Cardiac Investigations Unit at the Friendly Society Private Hospital went ahead without a hitch this week as cardiologist Doctor Andre Conradie and a dedicated team of specialist nurses and scouts scrubbed in for the first cardiac diagnostic procedure in the Cardiac Catheterization Theatre.

Patient Merle Riley underwent the diagnostic angiogram and LV angiography and said she was anxious before the procedure and daunted about being the first patient, however she soon felt at ease and relaxed when she could see how excited everyone was about this milestone.

"I couldn't believe I was awake the whole time; Dr Conradie and the team of nurses were so professional, the whole experience was great," she said.

"I felt very special, everyone was so attentive and caring, which helped ease my anxiety.

"It was a little overwhelming when Dr Conradie and Michelle Lohse, the Critical Care Nurse Unit Manager, presented me with chocolates and flowers after my procedure saying that I was now part of the Friendly Society Private Hospital's history as the first patient to experience the Cardiac Investigations Unit."

Dr Conradie also expressed his excitement at finally being able to deliver leading cardiac services to Bundaberg at the hospital.

"Nine years ago there was no CCU, we then progressed to basic cardiology services and we are now undertaking procedures in the Cardiac Investigations Unit, including insertions and revisions of cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators and cardioversions," he said.

"We will be able to determine a definitive diagnosis within 24 hours which will have a major impact on the acute management of patients with acute coronary syndromes to also allow and enhance a much faster and more effective recovery option for patients."
