Family venture brings bespoke sailing experience to 1770

A formidable father, son and daughter team has tapped into a new concept in getting out there on the water, and a business opportunity that will connect the community to its spectacular coast.

A bespoke cruising experience is coming to the waters of the Bundaberg region, with Cruising Round 1770 officially opening its doors on Friday, September 16, 2022.

Promising to be a cruising experience like no other, owner James Olive said he was excited to get people out on the water.

“We’re keen to get people out and show them the beauty of the area, help them get on the water instead of just looking at it.”

Mr Olive came across the business opportunity during lockdown, when working on a future houseboat business he chanced upon a local person building small self-piloted vessels.

“Initially it was from a lady who moved up from the Gold Coast. I saw her setting these up and I inquired about them.

“Once Covid-19 ended and restrictions opened up, she approached me and decided she was ready to sell,” he said.

A long-time Agnes Water resident, Mr Olive said it was time spent on the water with his father that made him so excited by the business opportunity.

“I’ve always been on the ocean with my father, we’ve always been into sailing, surfing, snorkelling, diving, anything that gets us out on the water.”

Mr Olive is now working with his dad Harvey and his younger sister Rowena to bring the business to the community, and is glad for their support.

Mr Olive hopes to his business to connect the local community to parts of 1770 they may never have discovered before.

“I think it will definitely show the highlights of the area, including the natural birdlife and marine life,” he said.

Mr Olive has big plans for the venture, and plans to expand into more boats and introduce houseboats as another way for locals and tourists to spend more time in the region.

The self-drive orange vessels are ideal for the gentle waters of 1770, and the many scenic spots off the mainland.

“They’re all-rounder vessels for everyone to have fun on the water, be safe and be stable,” Mr Olive said.

“We’re looking forward to getting people out on the water and showing a different view of Agnes and 1770,” he said.
Bookings officially open on Friday, ahead of the school holidays.
