Dolphins Schoolgirl Challenge begins for Wide Bay

The Dolphins Schoolgirls Challenge has kicked off with the region’s students embracing the opportunity to play rugby league.

Bundaberg region high school students took to the field to experience rugby league first hand on Thursday for the Dolphins Schoolgirls Challenge.

Four games were played with Hervey Bay State High School against Bundaberg State High School and Isis State High School against Shalom College.

Teams were split across three divisions, years 7 and 8, years 9 and 10 and an open team for girls in years 11 and 12.

Dolphins NRL Wide Bay game development officer Danny Blair said the series was a great opportunity to introduce regional players to rugby league.

“It’s all about getting people involved, not only in rugby league but sport in general,” he said.

Mr Blair said the idea for the series was from the Dolphins game development manager Shane Morris.

“He worked with all the schools in the region and it is really his initiative along with the sports co-ordinators with the schools involved,” Mr Blair said.

The games were modified for the series, with only nine players per side, a smaller field and 15 minute halves.

Isis State High head of physical education department and coach Jeremy Haaksma said it was a great opportunity for the regional teams to play the larger schools.

“For this competition everyone was happy to come out here for round one which is really great for local sport,” he said.

As a limited series, Mr Haaksma said it was a great way to get girls involved in the game without committing themselves to a full playing season.

“We’ve had girls come down off the oval during training asking if they can join in,” he said.

Hervey Bay High School junior rugby league academy co-ordinator and coach Michelle Heron agreed it was a great opportunity.

“It has been absolutely fantastic to have the Dolphins come down as a club to promote female football as a pathway,” she said.
