Could an Aussie vaccine passport be our ticket to freedom?

Wide Bay residents have wasted no time rolling up their sleeves with thousands having received their vaccine.

As of August 1, there were 38.7% of people aged 15 and over with at least one dose in the Wide Bay Statistical Area 4 and 18.4% of people over the age of 15 who are fully vaccinated in the region.

When comparing Wide Bay’s fully vaccination rates to other areas across Queensland, the region is tracking around midfield for people who are fully vaccinated.

At the lower end of the vaccination rates is Mackay/Whitsunday/Isaac area with 27.1% of people aged 15 and over with at least one dose and 10.2% of people over the age of 15 who are fully vaccinated.

Leading the way is Brisbane – West with 46.2% of people aged 15 and over with at least one dose and 24.5% of people over the age of 15 who are fully vaccinated.

The Department of Health states the Commonwealth allocates and distributes vaccine to ensure equitable distribution across Australia based on a number of factors, such as the per-capita population for each jurisdiction and the estimated eligible population across cohorts.

While the Commonwealth allocates the total number of vaccine available for delivery for any given period, the Jurisdictions nominate the specific locations and amounts of vaccine, within this allocation, for delivery.

The NewsMail reported yesterday that Bundaberg’s Covid fever clinic has seen an almost 500 per cent increase in testing numbers since Saturday as the delta variant continues to spread through the southeast.

According to the Queensland Health vaccine statistics, 36,643 vaccine doses have been administered in total in the Wide Bay.

It should be noted the Queensland Health data reflects the COVID-19 vaccine doses administered by Queensland Health, it does not include vaccines administered by Commonwealth providers and General Practitioners.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services took to social media last week to announce the region thank the community for its “enthusiastic and strong take up of Covid-19 vaccination”, having reportedly hit the 100,000 vaccine mark.

“This figure is consists of vaccinations at our WBHHS clinics as well as from primary health and Commonwealth vaccine provider,” the post read.

“Some 71, 250 members of our community have now received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine – including 32,272 people who have had two doses.”

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service COVID-19 Vaccine Lead Fiona Sewell said it’s “wonderful” so many people in the community have “enthusiastically got behind the effort to keep all of us safe by receiving COVID-19 vaccinations”.

“Our regular vaccine clinics at Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Maryborough have been constantly busy with appointments, while our visiting clinics to Gayndah, Agnes Water, Monto and other locations across our region have been embraced by local communities,” Ms Sewell said.

“I wish to also thank our wonderful staff for their professionalism, positive attitude and work ethic as they serve at our vaccination clinics – their contribution is greatly appreciated by the entire health service and the broader community.

“I also encourage eligible people to get vaccinated as it’s the best way to protect yourself against the virus and ensure you can get back to a normal way of life that is no longer restricted by COVID-19.”

She said people should register their interest so an appointment can be booked when they become eligible for a vaccination – just please be patient of supply issues which can at times cause a delay in when you can be booked for an appointment.
