Woman rushed to hospital after Childers blaze caused by her dogs

A crime scene has been declared after multiple fire crews were unable to save a Childers’ home from being destroyed by fire overnight.

A woman was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation following a fire that destroyed her home near Childers early on Wednesday morning, July 19.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were called to the home on Garryowen Road in Redridge, 10km northeast of Childers, at 2.30am on Wednesday.

The spokeswoman said on arrival police found a 68-year-old woman outside the home.

She told police the fire was caused by an accident in her kitchen involving her dogs, the QPS spokeswoman said.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the woman was taken to Childers Hospital at 2.40am in a stable condition with smoke inhalation.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service has been contacted for the woman’s condition.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said four fire crews arrived at the scene at 3am, with the house fully on fire inside and out.

Two firemen in breathing apparatus entered the house to ensure all occupants including the woman’s dogs were safely outside the home, the QFES spokeswoman said.

Firecrews extinguished the fire after 5am by which time the house had fully collapsed.

QPS has declared a crime scene, with a QFES fire investigator expected to arrive on Wednesday.
