Wildlife carers have revealed the man attacked by a kangaroo in Moore Park Beach was trying to help her joey after running into it with his car.

Queensland Wildlife Carers and Volunteers president Christine Wynne said the service received a call after the attack from a concerned member of the public reported an injured joey.

Ms Wynne dispatched one of her volunteers who lives in the area to the scene, who heard from a witness to the attack that the man had been trying to pick up the joey after running into it with his car on Palm View Drive.

President of Queensland Wildlife Carers and Volunteers Christine Wynne said residents living in areas surrounded by wildlife such as Moore Park Beach should take care when approaching or handling wild animals and their offspring.

“Apparently the joey was on the road, and he was trying to get it off the road or pick it up,” Ms Wynne said.

“And of course the mother, being a mother, attacked him.”

It is common for wild animals to be aggressive when protecting their young, and residents living in areas surrounded by wildlife such as Moore Park Beach should take care when approaching or handling their offspring, Ms Wynne said.

“If they think their baby is threatened, it’s like a human; you’ll protect your child it’s just the same,” she said.

“That’s basically all she was doing. In most cases where people have been attacked by kangaroos, it’s because they were annoying them or aggravating them, they don’t just attack for no reason.”

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service was unable to confirm the man’s current condition or if he has been discharged.

Paramedics assessed the man’s injuries and treated him at the scene before transporting him to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.
