Emergency services rushed to blaze in Walkervale

A woman has been taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation after a candle in her bedroom reportedly set curtains alight and then destroyed her Bundaberg home.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said six crews were dispatched to a fire on Buzza St, in Walkervale at 11.55am.

Crews fought the fire which had taken hold both inside and outside the single-story house.

It was finally extinguished by 12.30pm.

A QFES spokesperson said all occupants of the house were accounted for.

Bundaberg Station Officer Trevor Farraway said the fire was started by the wind blowing a curtain onto the flame of a candle.

“The elderly resident called Queensland Police; they had a candle light in the front bedroom, just with the wind conditions that candle has come in contact with some curtains,” Mr Farraway said.

“Upon arrival there were large volumes of black smoke issuing from the house, a rapid assessment of the house was conducted.

“The access to the house was easy due to the front door and the back door being open, we were able to enter the dwelling and contain the fire to the structure of origin before it could spread to neighbouring properties.

“The house is extensively damaged.”

Mr Farraway credited the brick structure with stopping the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said an elderly woman was taken to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition with suspected smoke inhalation.
