A new card which aims to protect the privacy of domestic violence victims and survivors has been launched in Bundaberg.
Not-for-profit domestic and family violence support service EDON Place launched SAFECard on May 1.
The card can be used by domestic violence victims and survivors while accesses services such as a medical practice or other support services to avoid giving out personal details verbally and potentially having their details overheard by someone known to the perpetrator.

Supported and funded by the Zonta Club of Bundaberg, the SAFEcard includes a short message explaining the card owner’s circumstances as a victim-survivor of domestic violence and asks to be allowed to provide personal details in writing rather than saying them out loud.
EDON Place developed the card based on feedback from their clients that they felt unsafe when giving their details verbally at local appointments.
“When the (domestic violence victim-survivor) is providing their details out loud, it does jeopardise their safety,” EDON Place community engagement co-ordinator Jenae George said.
“So it’s giving them their dignity and privacy as well as (enabling) the service to gather as much information as needed to be able to assist that client.”
The SAFECard will be distributed to victims-survivors through Queensland Police and health services including hospitals, GPs and social workers.
EDON Place will provide training to service providers to ensure that they are familiar with the SAFECard.

The launch of the SAFEcard on May 1 marks the beginning of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
Other events planned by EDON Place for May include a Candlelight Vigil from 5.30pm at the Bundaberg Police Beat on Bourbong St, Bundaberg Central.
The Candlelight Vigil will pay respects to those who have lost their lives due to Domestic and Family Violence.
