Supporters are rallying behind a petition to designate Nudibranch Park at Bargara a green zone.
Environmental advocate Adriana Artista has initiated a petition on change.org to save Nudibranch Park, a vital marine ecosystem in Bargara.
Ms Artista, who actively participates in the Wide Bay Clean Beach Up Facebook group, is calling for the park to be designated as a green zone within the Great Sandy Marine Park.
The petition claims Nudibranch Park, once a vibrant underwater haven teeming with diverse marine life and stunning coral gardens, is facing a critical decline.
Ms Artista said the park had experienced a rapid depletion of fish populations, which threatened the delicate marine balance and overall health of the ecosystem.
In her petition, which had garnered 190 signatures by Friday afternoon out of a target of 200, Ms Artista highlighted the urgent need for conservation.
“Our beloved ecosystem is on the brink of collapse,” she said.
“We refuse to stand by as species disappear one by one.”
The petition emphasises the effectiveness of Green Zones in marine conservation.
According to a 2020 study by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, reserves where fishing is strictly regulated have, on average, 35 per cent more fish species and twice as many larger fishes compared to areas subject to overfishing.
Ms Artista said that she believed designating Nudibranch Park as a Green Zone would significantly contribute to restoring fish populations and revitalising the park’s coral gardens.
“Our shared legacy depends on the decisions we make today,” she said.
“We must act quickly to restore and preserve our priceless marine ecosystems.”
The advocate urged everyone to join the campaign and sign the petition to help secure a brighter future for Nudibranch Park.
