Excitement is building in Bundaberg as construction is set to commence imminently on a new social housing development in Kalkie.
This $9.96 million project, a partnership between the state government and local community housing provider Regional Housing Limited, will deliver 16 new, two-bedroom social homes in Kalkie.
Once completed, the homes will offer safe and secure housing options for a diverse range of people on the Social Housing Register, including individuals, couples, young people, small families, those with disabilities, and seniors looking to downsize from larger social homes.

Housing, Local Government and Planning Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the project was an example of how they were working with community housing providers to deliver more homes.

“Since 2017, we’ve partnered with Regional Housing Limited to commence 61 new social homes in the Wide Bay Burnett region – including 20 homes delivered in Bundaberg in 2021 and 2022,” she said.

In addition to the upcoming development, four of the new homes will be designed to gold standard under the Social Housing Design Guidelines, ensuring accessibility for individuals with disabilities and seniors with mobility needs.

The Kalkie social housing plot is at 165 Bargara Road.

Labor Bundaberg MP Tom Smith praised his government’s commitment to social housing in the region.

“Our government has a strong record of delivering more social housing here in Bundaberg,” he said.

Regional Housing Limited chairperson Nathan Freeman said secure and affordable housing could be life changing for families and individuals doing it tough.

“We look forward to seeing the positive impact these units have both within the community and the lives of those who call them home,” he said.
