Planning is underway to upgrade mental health services at the Childers Multipurpose Health Service facility.
Health Minister Shannon Fentiman’s office said on Friday investigations had begun into opportunities to expand virtual care modalities on offer, in the hope of providing mental health services and treatment closer to home.
The upgrades to the facility near the Childers’ Hospital will be funded under the Building Rural and Remote Health Program, which aims to improve health care in rural and remote parts of the country.
Construction is expected to begin in 2025.
The existing facility offers a range of services, including acute inpatient, long stay, emergency medicine, mental health, allied health, and oral health services.
Ms Fentiman welcomed the investment and credited the ongoing work of the existing facility and staff.
“I am thrilled to announce the upcoming enhancement to the Childers Multipurpose Health Service after visiting last year,” she said.
“The upgraded Childers’ facility will ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare for generations to come.”
Ms Fentiman said the new development would support the ongoing work of health care providers in the Childers community.
“I know the health staff here do an incredible job caring for their communities and deserve fit-for-purpose and modern facilities to deliver their world class healthcare,” she said.
“These works highlight our government’s commitment to delivering health services closer to home for communities, no matter where they live.”
