Teen bitten by a shark at Bargara

Paramedics are on the scene and treating a teen after she was bitten while swimming at a popular beach at Bargara near Bundaberg on Friday afternoon.

A patient has been treated for minor wounds after being bitten by a shark while swimming near Nielsen Park Beach at Bargara on Friday afternoon.

The Queensland Ambulance Service was called to the Bargara Surf Life Saving Club at 4pm, with a paramedic and doctor travelling to the scene.

A girl, aged about 13, is believed to have puncture wounds to her abdomen and lower back.

Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said units went to Fred Courtice Avenue after a reported shark bite in the water nearby.

Queensland Ambulance Operations Supervisor Matthew Davenport spokes on the incident.

“About 1600 hours QAS received a call for a believed to be thirteen year old female bitten by a shark in the Bargara area in the Wide Bay,” he said.

“The young lady had been brought up to the local surf living club and into the treatment room where they began providing first aid.”

“She’d received a bite to the right side of her abdomen and across the buttocks on the right side.

He said the injuries were mainly to soft tissue, and the young girl was lucky considering the nature of the incident.

Witness Sue Smith spoke on the demeanour of the young shark bite victim and said “she was waving when she was on the stretcher, she seemed in good spirits.”

Mr Davenport agreed the teen had remained calm during the initial treatment, and worked with emergency services.

“She was quiet calm about the situation, still shocked, the parents arrived and were quite shocked at the incident happening, it is not known to have shark bites in the Wide Bay area,” he said.
